Yen Plus’s final print issue.

This issue saw the final chapters of Pig Bride (a decidedly happy ending) and One Fine Day; these were the only two series to see a full run in Yen Plus.

As a bonus treat, we get the first chapter of the fourth and latest arc of Higurashi When They Cry, the Time Killing Arc. This one starts out in 1978, as a somewhat creepy police investigator heads to Hinamizawa to see if the dam-protesting villagers could have played any part in the kidnapping of a bureaucrat’s child.

Nightschool takes a one-issue hiatus as artist Svetlana Chmakova helps prepare the third collected volume. But in its place, we get a two-page color comic by her about her recent trip to Japan. Though the art is done in her cartoony “chibi” style, the coloring in some of the panels is rather brilliant, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Also, the first page of this issue’s Black Butler is just wrong.

Maximum Ride is on hiatus again this month, “due to Narae’s health,” according to JuYuon Lee. Raiders finishes its two-month preview, and we’re also treated to a preview of girly comic 13th Boy. This issue also contains a bonus cover wrap for Spice and Wolf, a Japanese “light novel” being translated and released by Yen Plus; read my totally biased coverage about that cover and some of the trouble surrounding it.

Hero Tales

The October issue features the last appearance of Sumomomo Momomo. The portion serialized in Yen Plus comprises the first two collected volumes. In her note, JuYuon explains that, starting in the third volume, the naughtiness of the series ramps up a bit, so much so that they don’t want to run it in an “older teen”-targeted magazine. Hmm…

Making a special appearance in this issue is the first chapter of the novel Soulless, by author Gail Carriger and published by Yen Press’s sister company Orbit. Subtitled “A Novel of Vampires, Werewolves, and Parasols,” Soulless seeks to stand out among the stacks of Twilight-inspired novels of the cultured paranormal currently plaguing American bookstores by its premise of taking place in high-society Victorian England. Personally, the story didn’t do much for me, but I could see where it would have its fans.
