Yen Plus Info is a totally unofficial fan site about Yen Plus, a monthly comics/manga/manhwa anthology published by Yen Press. This is not the official Yen Press site.

Covers, Twitters, Letterers

Three things of interest today. First off, Yen Press has updated their blog with details about the March 2009 issue of Yen Plus, which should be hitting stores soon. Dig the cover art. The most interesting bit is the debut of yet another new feature; a column somewhat worringly entitled “Otaku Pimp” which will cover the world of Japanese pop culture. Hmm. I’ll be checking my local bookstore tomorrow; expect an update or two over the weekend if the ish is there.

Next: Did you know Yen Press has a Twitter feed? (I can’t find any mention of it on their regular web site; I would not have known of its existence if they hadn’t linked to YPI (thanks!). I stumbled it when checking out my server’s referral stats earlier today.) For those not in the know, Twitter is a sort of blogging service where all posts can only be a few words long - it’s sort of like the illegitimate child of a blog and an instant message service. By tracing their friends list, I found a couple other Yen crew members on Twitter as well; here’s Svetlana Chmakova’s feed (though it’s sorely in need of an update), and I’m guessing Yen Plus assistant editor Tania Biswas is behind this caffeine-fueled feed.

Finally, here’s a fascinating article about comics grammar and tradition, specifically when it comes to word/thought/narration balloons and the lettering therein. It applies mostly to western comics - certainly Japanese and Korean comics have their own habits - but I think comic fans of all sorts will get a kick out of it, especially if they’re also language nerds like me. Now if Yen Press could only stop abbreviating “because” as “‘cos” for whatever reason…

Silence speaks volumes, but I just write about them.

I recently picked up the Volume 1 books of both Maximum Ride and Higurashi When They Cry, and have added some info and perspectives on each book to their respective comics’ pages.

Hey, speaking of silence… break it! If you’re out there and you like the site, why not drop me a note and let me know?

February comes

The February issue of Yen Plus is now in stores. I picked up my issue today. (Yeah, even I don’t have a subscription yet. I’m lazy.) The covers feature the new series making their debut in this issue: on the right-to-left side is Hero Tales, a light-hearted story about a young swordsman with the power of a star seeking a sword some sap stole from him (alliteration is awesome!); on the left-to-right side, the perviously unannounced Korean series Time and Again introduces us to a slightly dark tale of two traveling exorcists ready to take their clients’ money, even if they don’t always give them the help they’re asking for. I’ll get up new pages for this new issue over the weekend, though I suspect finding more information about Time And Again may be difficult, seeing as how nobody knew of the series under that name outside of Yen Press until the last few days. If I’m going to be working on this site seriously in the future, maybe I should learn to read Korean…

EDIT: New pages now up.

The start of something new

Welcome to Yen Plus Info, a new fan site for the monthly comics anthology Yen Plus. This site is designed to provide as much information as possible on Yen Plus, the comics it has featured, and the people behind it all. Thanks for stopping by, and please don’t be afraid to contact me and let me know what you think - especially if you can provide some more information for some of my thinner pages.
